The Missionary Who Didn’t Want To Die
The Sentinelese People just want to be left alone.
They’ve made that clear for over a hundred years as they live in the remote parts of India on a small island. While there have been attempts to contact these people, and even gather information about them, these people have fiercely resisted any attempts for the government and its officials, as well as missionaries and anthropologists to make any contact with them.
They have good reason.
Other tribes that have surrounded the Sentinelese were wiped out by disease and efforts to civilize them. The British were responsible for nearly wiping out all the inhabitants of this island. Tens of thousands of tribespeople were killed by the British in their forever conquest to civilize the world and exploit the resources of lands that never belonged to them in the first place. The Sentinelese people have taken those lessons of other lost tribes and made the decision to not fraternize with the outside world. They didn’t want to become extinct like so many others. The Indian Government tried numerous times to make contact with this group but decided against it in later years. Human Rights organizations have advised the Indian government and others to respect the rights of the tribe and leave them in peace.
