I’m telling you, as a person of color, that is what happens when people scream at us, “This is nothing more than identity politics”, and then dismiss our concerns. It’s what black people are used to. Just call it identity politics and then stand by and do nothing.

It’s not a minority on the “other side”. Anyone listening to Trump for five minutes at one of his rallies can identify the same kind of identity politics that people complain about on the Left.

Regardless if you think those kind of politics are not helpful to a democracy, what should black people do when we have concerns that need to be addressed? Is “mass incarceration” identity politics? Is it when police tend to use deadly force on blacks moreso than with whites? How should we address these issues?

Was slavery ‘identity politics’? What about the civil rights movement? What qualifies? I’m curious and would like to know because I’m really out of ideas.
